You can take pictures or recordings of the screen on your Mac using Screenshot or keyboard shortcuts. Screenshot provides a panel of tools that let you to take screenshots and screen recordings. You can use options to control what you capture.
How to Screenshot on Mac Computer
To take a screenshot on a Mac, you can use the following shortcuts:
Capture the entire screen:
- Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 3
- Screenshot will be saved to your desktop by default.
Capture a selected portion of the screen:
- Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 4.
- Your cursor will turn into a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture. Release the mouse button to take the screenshot.
- The screenshot will be saved to your desktop.
Capture a specific window:
- Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 4, then press the Spacebar.
- Your cursor will change to a camera icon. Click on the window you want to capture.
- The screenshot will be saved to your desktop.
Capture the Touch Bar (if your Mac has one):
- Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 6.
- The screenshot will be saved to your desktop.
Screenshot with options (macOS Mojave or later):
- Press Shift + Command (⌘) + 5.
- This brings up the screenshot toolbar, where you can capture the entire screen, a selected window, or a selected portion. You can also record your screen from here.
These screenshots are usually saved as .png files on your desktop, but you can change the location by dragging the thumbnail that appears after taking the screenshot.
